As I intended to write a blog post about the New Moon as we are getting closer to this phase now, I knew and felt something was off. You see, as I mentioned in previous blog post, many people divide the phases of the moon often in:
• the two-system Moon Phase
• the four-system Moon Phase
• and the eight-system Moon Phase
All of them explain in a simple or complex way the cycle of the Moon and its characteristics. Nothing wrong here, but what often happens is that the Dark Moon does’t get mentioned, but is just simply blended somewhere between the Waning Moon phase and The New Moon Phase. If we look at all the phases of the lunar cycle and we count them including the dark Moon Phase, then we get a Nine-System Moon phase:
The Nine-system Moon Phase
1. New Moon
2. Waxing Crescent
3. Fist Quarter
4. Waxing Gibbous
5. Full Moon
6. Waning Gibbous
7. Last Quarter
8. Waning Crescent
9. Dark Moon
I gave the phases numbers to let you see how many they are but this does’t mean that the Dark Moon is at the End of the Moon Cycle or at the beginning of a New Moon Cycle. I explain more about this below.
But where can we find this Dark Moon phase then?
Most moon calendars (and websites) will mark the Dark Moon as the New Moon. The reason is that astronomers note the New Moon as the day/moment when the Moon is at zero illumination. For them this is the exact point when a New Moon Cycle begins.
But if you look at the Moon at this moment what do you see?
Well, you will see total darkness. Hence, the Dark Moon phase. The New Moon actually begins when she shows her very first, tiniest sliver of illumination.
So, now you can see why she is often forgotten as a phase and just gets blended with the New Moon Phase energy.
When working with intentions, often it gets mentioned to write down your intentions the day after the New Moon. This is a clue! But at the core it tells the same: reset, relax, regenerate, dream and at the same time it tells to explore, make a list of goals and to write your intentions.
If you put both phases together as one, you will get kind of contradicting energies and that is why it is important to divide them or at least to have a sense of what comes first and not mixed them together. For example writing and braindostoming about your goals for the next Moon Cycle and later relaxing and taking a well deserve pause while closing the previous Moon Cycle.
When you are at the end of the Dark Moon phase, you can integrate her slowly with the New Moon Phase, as you start (slowly but surely) to get more and more active.
For some people The Dark Moon closes a Moon cycle while others says she opens a new cycle. Neither ways are wrong. I feel that this is a very personal opinion and as you get to know the Moon and yourself better, you will decide where she stands for in the way you feel about her.
Her place is always between the Waning Crescent Moon and The New Moon. You will never find her somewhere else.
The way I see and feel about the Dark Moon is that she is a point or gap between the previous Moon cycle and the new Moon cycle. This point or gap is a pause, a moment of silence and quietness where the Moon digest and integrates all of the last cycle leaving nothing in there but total darkness. We need this total darkness, because with it we can create something new.
We can compare this phase/process with the womb. The womb contains the darkness of the Moon which is necessary to welcome the seed to create a new life. If the womb is already filled with other life or other things there would be no space to create the new, the new life and or to grow.
The seed comes during the New Moon. But now we are in total darness, and we can only iluminate ourselves and our path with our inner light.
This is a time to trust ourselves, listen to our inner voice and intuition. If we don’t take the time to do so, how can be in aligment with outselves, the world and the Moon?
The Forgotten Phase
I think this phase often gets forgotten because we are programmed to always keep ongoing. The dark Moon is the time when the Moon says: Stop! How are you taking a well deserve pause for yourself? Can you hear the wisdom and teachings of the silence? Of the gap, the pause? Can you be in between cycles, between worlds?
Do you see how important and crucial she is?
There are countless blog post, articles and books written about the importance of taking a pause. But if we are honest we can see – and we often experience – that we live in a society where pauses are seen as unnecessary, and often seen (un)consciously as something only weak people do. We get breaks (not the same as a pause), 15 minutes, 30 minutes moments for ourselves, to often only eat our lunch. The other break we get is our sleep and which is also under fire, as I now often see blog post, videos, or other medium telling how to wake up at 5am and get the most out of your day….well, if we do this for an entire Moon cycle, and even after many Moon cycles, we will – sooner or later – break…and this is not the type of break you want to take!…say hello to your new buddy, Mister burn-out.
When working with the Moon cycle you will discover new formulas, new methods for a better way of living, for a unique – and just for you – lifestyle. And here I tell you a simple formula:
If you acknowledge the Dark Moon and start working with her, you will acknowledge yourself. This is the best gift you can give yourself as you can only change what you acknowledge.
Woking with the Dark Moon
As I already mentioned her place is between the Waning Crescent Moon and The New Moon and she is there for a reason. We need her energy, and with it we need to take a pause somewhere between the closing of last cycle and opening of the new one.
During the Waning Moon Phase we already start closing our intentions, but we are still very mentally active with them and wrapping them up until the Last quarter. Then, during the Waning Crescent phase we leave or park our intentions and begin to relax and take care of ourselves and/or our homes.
My Formula for the dark Moon
Before I do this I need to know exactly when The Waning Crescent Moon ends and when the Dark Moon starts.
Next, I divide my Dark Moon energy in three parts:
1. A time to meditate about this last Moon Cycle. I do this at the very end of the Waning Crescent Phase
2. I just let myself be; I sit or lay in front of my altar and to do nothing. This can be seen as meditation too, but for me it is about to do nothing and observe all the sensations in and around me. If I feel I get tired I sleep and just listen to what ever my body, mind and soul needs. I do this for at least 1 hour. Here, I never use an alarm clock.
3. After that I journal whatever comes to mind, I answer some Dark Moon journal prompts in there too, and if I feel like it i will dream a bit about the Next Moon Cycle.
The Next Dark Moon
To know each moon phase at your location and other important information, I advise you to go to Astro Seek.
There you will find the Moon phases, time and much more.
For example, the next Dark Moon will take place – In the Netherlands on May 5h at 00.45, so around midnight. What I probably do is to mediate on this last Moon Cycle on May 4th before going to sleep and on Sunday the 5th in the morning I will continue with meditation, pause and journaling.
As soon as the Moon shows her very first, and tiniest sliver of illumination, I will set my intentions as I know now she is in the beginning of her new phase.
From May 7th until 18.22h on May 12th she will be in her Waxing Crescent phase.
In the New Moon Workbook I created, I combined the Dark Moon and the New Moon together (but in correct order) just because I didn’t want to over complicate things. In here, you will first clear your mind as you write, then write your wishes (Dark Moon) and then write your intentions (New Moon). It is up to you to take a pause before starting with the New Moon workbook, but I already pointed out how important this is.
This workbook is for starters and for people who just started working with the Moon. The same goes for my first Moon Bundle series which combines the Full Moon workbook too.
The Dark Moon will take her full place in the near future with other Moon Project I’m currently working on.
Keep in mind that these are just guidelines. I find it extremely important that you feel and experiment with the Moon energy to know what works for you best.
Last but not least, I want to say that what I write is based on what I feel and follow my intuition as much as possible, not always searching the “right” moment, or what is scientifically or magically is right according to others. It is essential to have at first basic knowledge and later a more in deep know how about the Moon and her workings but your intuition is key in this equation too. Never forget that! No matter what other people say.
